While the wife’s away…

July 3, 2012

While the wife’s away…

When you think about it, it’s a strange thing, that situation whereby expat wives and children disappear off home each summer. And, while I imagine that it happens to some extent in all expat postings, it’s particularly pronounced in the UAE, where there’s both a high number of expats and a particularly inhospitable climate.

In fact, it’s got to be one of the weirdest things about expat life in the UAE – can you imagine your wife disappearing off with the children for a quarter of the year, every year, back home?

The decision of whether or not to leave is never easy an easy one. It’s hard for small children to live an indoor life for three months, and a trip home is always a good chance for them to spend time with their grandparents – but most husbands can’t swing more than a couple of weeks off work.

In fact, whatever you choose to do, the coffee-shop gossips will have something to say about it: If you leave for a long stretch, you’re either too confident (“What man wouldn’t cheat given the chance?”) or too disinterested (“Why would you want to leave him for so long?”). But, if you choose to stay – and, honestly, there’s a lot more to do in Dubai in the summer now than there ever used to be – you’re “paranoid” and “have marital issues”.

Much is said every year about what the abandoned men get up to once their wives leave. Aside from the “lost souls, shopping for groceries with a blank look on their faces”, Dubai summer bachelor stories are legendary:  Foam parties, prostitutes, cabin crew, girlfriends, bachelor pads, “extra services” from the housemaid – you name it, we’ve heard it all.

These days, though, I don’t think this behaviour – specific to the summer – is as widespread as it used to be. Aside from that tricky little thing called work, there’s more fear these days that the authorities will catch up with any “sexpat” misbehaviour – and no-one wants to be tomorrow’s tabloid headline.

But what rarely gets talked about – except on drunken nights out in Mahiki or anonymously on expat forums – is the other side of the story: What the wives get up to when they’re also suddenly “single” for three months.

And, the more I talk to people, the more I realise the wives have their secrets, too. Reunions with sexy ex-workmates, wine-bar flirtations, Facebook hook-ups, stolen kisses with ex-boyfriends and – a phrase I heard for the first time last summer – a “harmless bit of summer crumpet”.

So what causes an expat wife – with a very nice life, thank you very much – to risk it all by running into the arms of a man back home? Freedom, boredom, nostalgia, familiarity? Or the suspicion that her husband is doing the same in Dubai? I’ve heard of many who ignore their husband’s philandering because they don’t want to lose their luxury lifestyles.

“She knows he cheats,” wrote one woman on a Dubai chat forum, “but she gets her villa, her four-wheel-drive, her Botox and her infinity pool – so she turns a blind eye.” Maybe she should have added, “and she gets her summer crumpet, too.”

Career-planning tips for expat stay-at-home moms

Career-planning tips for expat stay-at-home moms

Many expat moms decide to re-establish a career while living overseas. Careful planning is the key to a smooth transition from stay-at-home mom to working woman.

Expatriate wives who are stay-at-home mothers might find that re-entering the workforce after a prolonged absence is fraught with issues that go far beyond cover letters and interviews. Many moms at the crossroads find themselves battling a crushing lack of confidence, the erosion of their skills, and the loss of their professional network. Even something as simple as putting together an appropriate working wardrobe can seem daunting when starting from scratch.

Low confidence levels have a way of sabotaging even the most determined efforts to restart a stalled career. That’s not surprising, considering stay-at-home mothers spend several years focusing on developing softer, more nurturing skills that aren’t always valued in the workplace. During that time away, things change: technology, corporate attitudes, client expectations. Many expat wives start to question whether they’ve still got what it takes to be competitive in an increasingly unforgiving business climate.

Job Search Strategies for Expat Moms

Working abroad is possible, but grabbing the first job that comes up can be self-defeating. A better approach, according to Dubai-based career coach (and expat mom) Nicola Supka, is for the expatriate to design a strategy to relaunch her career overseas. In an interview with Suite 101, Supka outlined a few steps every expat mom should follow on her journey back to employment:

Check Spousal Employment Restrictions

Policies regarding accompanying spouses vary from country to country. A call to the home embassy should clear up any questions about spousal employment restrictions. (An expat wife who is unable to work needn’t despair – she can use the time before the next international assignment to lay the groundwork for the job of her dreams.)

Be Clear About Career Goals

The jobseeker who takes the time to consider her passions and values will be better able to find a job that reflects her needs.

Upgrade Skills to Re-Enter the Workforce

Technology becomes obsolete with lightning speed, and industry-specific practices can change over time. Fortunately, the internet has made skills development a breeze for virtually everyone. A motivated expat mum might even decide to take the plunge and retrain completely, or upgrade her current qualifications by tackling graduate school – either locally or through a distance education program. That kind of effort is not overlooked by those doing the hiring. “Enthusiasm definitely counts,” Supka says. “Employers like to see that level of commitment.”

Take Advantage of Volunteer Opportunities Abroad

Volunteering is an easy way to explore options; a dry run for the real thing. However, it’s important to approach overseas volunteer work with professionalism. The best unpaid work affords the stay-at-home mom the opportunity to hone transferable skills, learn new proficiencies, develop contacts, and establish some credentials. (The fulfillment that comes from working for an important cause is an added bonus.)

Create a Winning Resume

Many moms who’ve been on a lengthy hiatus are concerned about that glaring hole in their CV. Nicola Supka doesn’t see it as a problem. “A resume is a sales document,” she says. “You shouldn’t lie, of course, but you can – and should – highlight what’s relevant, and downplay the rest.” Volunteer work has its place on a resume as well. “Employers don’t care if you got paid,” Supka says. “The important thing is that you did the work.”

Make Use of Networking Opportunities When Seeking Jobs

Supka advises expat jobseekers to tell everyone they meet what their career goals are. “You’d be surprised what other moms do for a living. Some of them are hiring people just like you,” she says. “Taking that risk definitely pays off.” Professional women’s associations are a rich source of networking opportunities, where expatriate women can gain the support of like-minded people, gain access to industry news and professional training, and possibly find a mentor to help guide them along their path.

Understand the Host Culture When Working Overseas

Odds are good that the business environment in the host country won’t be identical to the one back home. Meeting etiquette, preferred negotiation styles, gift giving, the cultural view of time – these are just a few aspects of intercultural business communication that can trip up the unsuspecting expat working overseas. Another potential minefield is the role of women in the workplace.

In some countries, it may be unrealistic for expatriate women to expect to achieve the same level of success they did in their own country. Women are also advised to pay special attention to dress codes, especially in more conservative regions.

Once an expat mom has determined her eligibility to work abroad, she can make the transition to full-time employment easier with proper planning. By establishing clear career goals, upgrading her skills, volunteering overseas, creating a winning resume, networking, and taking the time to understand the international business culture, she’ll increase her confidence – and the odds of finding the right job for her.

“Most people spend more time planning their holidays than developing a career plan,” says Supka. “But if you’re lucky, and if you put some effort into preparing for your job search, you can have something special – something that’s more than ‘just a job.’”

The Expat Wife's Prayer

July 1, 2012
The Expat Wife's Prayer

Heavenly Father, look down on us your humble obedient expat wives who are doomed to travel this earth following our loved ones through their working lives to lands unknown. We beseech you, oh Lord, to see that our plane is not hijacked or doesn't crash, our luggage is not lost or pillaged and our overweight baggage goes unnoticed.

Give us this day divine guidance in our selection of houses, maids and drivers. We pray that the telephone works, the roof does not leak, the power cuts are few and the rats and cockroaches even fewer.

Lord, please lead us to good, inexpensive restaurants where wine is included in the meal and the food does not cause dysentery. Have mercy upon us Lord if it be the latter, make us fleet of foot, to make the loo in time, and strong of knee in case we have to squat. Also give us the wisdom to tip correctly in currencies we do not understand.

Make the natives love us Lord for who we are and not for what we can contribute to their worldly goods. Grant us the strength to smile at our maids, even though our most treasured dress resembles a rag or they take bleach to clean our well-admired Persian rug.

Give us divine patience when we explain for the hundredth time the way we want things done and Lord if we ever lose our patience and thump them, have mercy on us for our flesh is weak.

Dear God, protect us from so-called "bargains" we don't need and can't afford. Lead us not into temptation for we know not what we do.

Almighty Father, keep our husbands from looking at foreign women and comparing them to us. Save them from making fools of themselves in nightclubs. Above all, please do not forgive their trespasses for they know exactly what they do.

And when our expat years are over Lord, grant us the favor of finding someone who will look at our photographs and listen to our stories, so our lives as expat wives will not have been in vain.

Amen

How To Create A Successful Home Business

June 24, 2012
How To Create A Successful Home Business

Would you believe someone if he or she said you could work from home and be your own boss? A lot of people try to say that you can work from home. You can be successful, but you need to understand that it takes hard work and dedication. The following information is meant to help you understand what is involved in starting a business.

Decide on a place to keep every one of your contracts, so they are easily accessible if needed during client discussions. It also helps to keep a file containing all of your service provider contracts for services such as internet, phone and cable, so they're easily found if you have any type of issue come up.

Make a banner page for your web site. This will give you the ability to trade your banner links with the businesses in which you stay in contact. The method is simple, but it will effectively allow for increasing both party's traffic and ratings among popular search engines.

A checking account designed for businesses helps you keep track of your business's financial activity separately from your personal finances. Use the account for everything that is related to your business. Doing this ensures that you always know what is going on with your business. For purchases like office supplies and miscellaneous expenses, use a separate business credit card.

Make sure you save your business receipts when running a home based business. Since you are self-employed, business supplies, as well as car mileage, can be deducted from your taxes. You may not know what is tax deductible, so make sure to keep all of your receipts. Failing to save receipts can result in your business owing more taxes than necessary.

You should make your office easy to get around in and easy to work in. What you don't want is a situation where you're constantly straining your neck while trying to view the monitor. Buy a good desk chair if you're going to be sitting in it a lot. Do the same thing for your keyboard, lighting fixtures and with your mouse and mouse pad as well. A budget of $200 would go a long way.

Determine the prices of your products. You have to figure in the cost of the product in order to know how much you will make from selling your product. The generally accepted formula to deduce the price that the customer will pay is to double the cost that you pay for the merchandise. This is what you should charge for wholesale. Multiply the cost thrice to find the retail price.

Have lunch with someone that makes you laugh, or find an activity that makes you laugh. Laughing lowers blood pressure, revives your respiratory system and provides a feeling of well being and happiness. So give yourself a break that will bring you back to your home business with enthusiasm. The choice is up to you: "Peanuts" cartoons, a viral video of someone's dog doing tricks, "Saturday Night Live", whatever it is that makes you laugh.

Many home business owners are coming together online. Investigate forums and message boards, both those devoted to your business niche and those outside it. Useful tips for running your business may pop up in unexpected places, and the experiences of business owners that are very different from your own can still have a lot to offer when it comes to advice.

It is important to always look to the future. Although it's good to congratulate yourself for the triumphs of yesterday, you should not live for the past. Instead, it is important that you concentrate on events which will occur the next day or week. This will keep you prepared for the upcoming opportunities, as well as future obstacles. You will not be surprised since you will know what to expect.

Make sure you keep a mileage log for each vehicle that is used for your business. You are subject to different tax laws as a business owner. One of these laws enables you to claim travel expenses, including fuel and lodging costs, as tax deductions. If your line of work requires you to travel frequently, your savings could be substantial.

As you have just learned, there are many people trying to sell you on scams. However, as you've learned throughout this article, there are also many common-sense tips and tactics that you can use in order to grow your home business. If you're willing to put in the work, you can certainly be successful.

Home Business Tips To Help You Succeed

June 24, 2012
Home Business Tips To Help You Succeed

There are undoubtedly many would-be entrepreneurs out there who dream of launching a home-based business. Not only are you your own boss, but you can work whenever you want to. It can be difficult, however, to make that dream into a reality, which is where the following tips can help.

Sufficient help is important in any business, especially a home-based daycare. It will be extremely difficult to take care of the kids, if you are not manned with the right amount of staff.

You will need to come up with a fair pricing system for your merchandise. You have to figure in the cost of the product in order to know how much you will make from selling your product. The standard way to determine pricing is doubling the amount each product costs you to make. This is what you should charge for wholesale. Get the retail price by multiplying the cost three times.

Take a break during your work day to have a good laugh. Having a hearty laugh session will exercise your lungs, invigorate and ultimately relax you with positive feelings. Whether it comes from Doonesbury cartoons or the latest viral YouTube video, a good laugh will right your ship and put you on a winning course back into focusing on work.

Enjoy a nice business trip. You should be able to deduct a portion of the expenses of your business trip from your taxes. If you are longing to take a trip, find some sort of conference that is related to your field so you can consider it a business trip. By incorporating business into your vacation, you make the trip tax deductible.

Business travel expenses, including driving, can be tax deductible if they meet certain criteria created by the IRS. For instance, if you are operating a home business that requires frequent trips to see customers or clients, these travel expenses can be deductible. When you start a home business, you can take certain tax deductions, including deductions for business-related transportation expenses. Those miles can really add up after a year of heavy travel.

Patience is key. Get out of the mindset that you'll be making huge profits overnight, or you'll face great disappointment. You will need to devote a lot of time and energy into a small business. When you put energy into the business, you have a higher chance for being successful. By putting your mind to it and making sure you are both patient and consistent when you run your business, you will reap the rewards of being a successful home business owner.

Furnish yourself with business cards as soon as possible. There are many websites online that offer free or inexpensive business card printing services. Your business cards should include your name, your business and a phone number that you can be reached at. Include your email address and the URL to your website on the card. This will make it easier for your customers to reach you in a variety of ways.

A business plan is a crucial component you need for your home business. No matter the size of your business, it is important to have a business plan in place. As your business expands, the business plan you write will help keep things growing in the right direction.

Whether you start your own company from an idea in your head or buy into a ready-made franchise, you need to keep in mind that success won't come overnight. You will need to factor in a reasonable timeline for success when starting a home business. Patience and dedication will help you succeed with your home business endeavor.

When you serve as the lone operator of a home-based business, it is important that you are the only one able to decide financial issues pertaining to it. Letting your spouse use the business credit card can be harmful if they go out and buy any non-business related items.

As you can see, it will require a little bit of work and dedication to make the jump. If you can manage to pull through and stick to the plan, you will be able to accurately represent your dream in the company's image and create something that is long-lasting and profitable over the years.

Home Business Strategies That Can Make You More Successful

June 24, 2012
Home Business Strategies That Can Make You More Successful

It is becoming apparent to many people that home businesses can be a great source of income. Although this is true, many don't know where to begin. If you want to do as well as possible, research your product or service. This article will give you an introduction to that knowledge and offer you the opportunity to use it in new and exciting ways.

While jogging your brain for ideas about your home business products, be sure to to find something that meets certain needs you have. There is a big market for products that have a practical use in people's everyday lives by helping them solve ordinary problems. You will be successful if you can create solutions to problems.

Be sure to share the right amount of information with your customers, so that your customers are informed without being overloaded. Allow your customers to decide whether they would like to receive newsletters and information about your specials and discounts. Do not go overboard with communicating too often.

Make it easy for people to contact you by email, phone or mail. Also take time to research the level of sales after contacting customers to see how effective your contact is. You may have guided the customer into purchasing your product due to the answer that you provided, so keep this up your sleeve for future occasions.

You could start a day care business, a grocery purchasing/delivering service, meal services for those on the go, or even chauffeur services. Do some brainstorming on paper to come up with ideas for helping out people in your community.

Working from home may seem relaxing and even fun, but you may also miss interacting with people at your office. To keep from getting too lonely, try to get out of the house at least several times a week.

Due to the fact that any home business can fail, you must start yours while you are still employed. It may take awhile to make any money, so do not give up your day job. Having an income while building up your new business is highly beneficial.

You may want to avoid taking out a loan to help you get started with your home business. Borrowing money from a friend or family member can potentially damage your relationship. It is not worth using your home as collateral to get a loan.

Try your best to keep your expenses down as you get into building your home business. You can save money on office space by working at home. Only buy necessary items to keep your expenses low. Your small investment allows you to keep your costs reasonable for clients too.

You should keep your focus set on the future. While celebrating recent successes is important, you should recognize that these events are over, and you should always look forward. Your focus now needs to be on the upcoming days and weeks. Keeping your mind on the future will make it easier for you to know what you need to capitalize on, and what obstacles may be coming. By doing so, you will not be surprised.

One of most important things for you to remember as the owner of a home business is that tax deductions are your friend. When you claim every deduction you legally can, you will save a great deal of money when it comes time to pay your taxes.

Potential investors will question you about how you plan on setting up your business and how you will plan to run it. Focus on maximizing your profits right now.

Before deciding on your home business, be sure you have a good understanding of all its needs. Make sure that you consider every aspect of business ownership before jumping in.

Do appropriate background checks on potential employees. Likewise, verify their employment references. Employees need to be able to keep up with your business, so make sure that their backgrounds indicate that they are skilled and reliable.

Now that you have a greater idea of what you need to do to create and manage a home business, you should start feeling like you can accomplish your home business goals. Remember that the information you learned is only going to work if you apply it. If you follow the tips in this article, then your home business should succeed.

Home Business Advice To Help You Succeed

June 24, 2012
Home Business Advice To Help You Succeed

As with most things, getting your home business going is easier when you start with the right knowledge. This guide contains a lot of tips that you can use in starting a home based business.

If your home business is a daycare program, you need to have enough adult help to run it smoothly. You will have a hard time without help if you have a lot of kids to care for.

If you're not comfortable with taxes, you need to hire an accountant. Trying to learn our increasingly complicated tax codes is not the best use of your time when you are starting out with a new business.

Have a normal schedule. Knowing when you are supposed to be working, and when you should be relaxing, can help to prevent burnout. Working lots of hours may be necessary sometimes, but be sure not to overdo it. When you are with your family, keep work out of your mind to try and help reduce your stress levels.

Mix business and pleasure when you go on vacation. There are tax deductions you can take from going on business trips. Find a destination where there is a conference or seminar related to your business if you desire a vacation. Attend the event and enjoy the remaining time as a vacation. By doing so, you will also be able to take a tax deduction without worrying about raising eyebrows at the IRS.

Prepare an exhaustive business plan for your home-based company. You can change this or disregard it at any time. A business plan acts as your mission statement, outlining how you would like to see your business develop. Constantly revise your business plan to reflect the current direction of your business.

The most important thing you can do for your home business is to be as professional as possible. An unprofessional looking website can quickly diminish any chance of gathering a strong customer base. Check out examples of other highly professional sites to give you inspiration to build your own.

Be sure to write a business plan. Even small businesses should take the time to properly craft a plan. This plan can help your business stay on track through all the phases that your business will go through.

Have a space in your home for work and only work. Be sure that you have enough space in your home to allow you to keep everything organized. By doing this, you will be able to keep your business organized.

You can get consumed by work if you live where you work. Make a work-specific area in your home, such as an office, to separate family and work time.

Once you open your home business, track the mileage you accumulate when driving for business purposes. When you run your own business, your tax situation will change. For one thing, you will be able to deduct business mileage expenses. If you find yourself leaving your home for official business often, this may result in significant tax breaks.

Make sure the name you choose for your business has meaning. Your brand is a symbol of your products, so if you have a name that people recognize, your customers will find relating to you an easier matter. Attach a quirky or inspirational story to your brand. By doing this, your brand will become familiar and customers will be loyal to your product.

Having adequate safety is important for a home business so you can prevent accidents in the workplace, especially when your family is around. For instance, it's a good idea to have a way to separate your business from the rest of your house. Taking the proper steps will keep both your business and your family from unforeseen accidents. Inspections can occur, even for home businesses.

Entertaining your clients could allow you to write off more money on your taxes. When you treat your clients to a meal and discuss business, you are entitled to deduct the meal costs from your taxes. It is important to save your receipts from any business related outings.

Having a home business is a dream of many people. However, it can be extremely hard to open up a home business without the adequate knowledge needed to succeed.

Home Based Business Tips And Strategies That Work

June 24, 2012
Home Based Business Tips And Strategies That Work

It is becoming apparent to many people that home businesses can be a great source of income. While owning a home business can be a profitable endeavor, knowing where to start can be difficult. To reach your goal, you should arm yourself with as much knowledge and information as possible. The information presented in this article will help you in this learning process.

As a sole business owner, be sure you control all financial decisions. Don't give your spouse the business credit card, unless they swear to buying only things for the business on the card.

Making business cards is important. You can find business card offers online for free or very cheap. Your business card needs to include the important contact data, like your name, your company name, phone number and email address. Be sure to include your email or website address. Giving your customers multiple options to contact you will make it easier for them to do so.

When you own a home business, sometimes you must try new things and gamble in order to hit it big. When you are willing to try new things in your business, you will find more people interested in what you are doing, which eventually means a bigger bottom line! If you stick to the same strategies and never try something new, you could miss out on huge opportunities to cash in big.

Working from home in your pajamas is as fun as it sounds, but don't be surprised if you end up missing that human interaction that you can only get from being out and about in the workplace. Get yourself outdoors a few times a week to meet up with friends and maintain those crucial personal connections.

If you are out of stock in a particular item, be sure to let your clients know about it. One way to upset your customers is to have them buy something and not let them know that it will not arrive for several weeks. Offer to ship the product when it comes back into stock, or suggest an alternative to keep your customers happy.

When running a business from home, it is important to be part of a network of your peers. Participating in a group with other home business owners can provide you with your own business network. Connecting with other home business owners can be as simple as meeting someone and exchanging information offline to begin creating your network. While those in your group might not work in your specific industry, you will have the common bond of owning a home business.

Deposit your payments almost as you receive them. Don't wait and deposit several payments at the end of the week; always take payments to the bank the same day you receive them. If you don't deposit a check right away, it could get lost. Make sure that when you do make a deposit, you do so with a live teller rather than an ATM machine. This way you will know that they money is going to the right place without any problems.

Do not be lenient when it comes to your customers paying your for your work. While this might seem like a good idea to build relationships, it could cost you big time. Set clear guidelines for payment terms in writing, making any penalties and interest transparent to the customer right on your invoices and website.

Never provide your services to someone else without a contract. Contracts specify what is expected of both parties to the transaction, and provides a legal framework for dispute resolution should the deal go sour.

Ensure that your home business is safe and secure. This might require you to invest in proper equipment, and set rules and boundaries. Having a separate office space or area that is secured to store your product in will keep people from going in, and keep your family and business safe from unforeseen accidents. If you have a home office you might still get your business inspected.

Now that you have a greater idea of what you need to do to create and manage a home business, you should start feeling like you can accomplish your home business goals. Remember that the information you learned is only going to work if you apply it. If you follow the tips in this article, then your home business should succeed.

Raise Your Home Business Potential With These Instructions

June 24, 2012
Raise Your Home Business Potential With These Instructions

To a lot of people, however, the idea of working from home seems too fantastic to be real. Running a home business can be even easier than you think, though, if you know how to do it efficiently and profitably. Read this article for great information on getting started and being successful in your home business venture.

Create a designated space for working within your home. You will need plenty of room to organize your work materials. Doing this will keep your home office organized, which is a key to success.

Manage your communications with your home based business customers to find the right balance between sharing pertinent information as necessary and sending too many messages.
